A Guide to Our Gemstones: How to Choose Your Stone

Green amethyst Isla jewelry set with necklace, bracelet and earrings in 14k gold vermeil - Everlyne

Every Everlyne piece is set with a real natural gemstone, and most of our designs come in several. Which means the hardest part of ordering is usually not choosing the piece — it's choosing the stone.

Here is the whole collection at a glance, then what each one actually looks like in person.

Stone Color Hardness Birthstone
London Blue quartz Deep, steely ink blue 7 —
Iolite Shifting violet-blue 7–7.5 —
Amethyst Lilac to deep purple 7 February
Rhodolite garnet Raspberry to plum pink 7–7.5 January
Green amethyst Soft mint green 7 —
Champagne quartz Warm, smoky gold 7 —
Black spinel Deep glossy black 8 —
Labradorite Gray with blue-green flash 6–6.5 —
Freshwater pearl Soft white luster 2.5–4.5 June

Hardness is the Mohs scale, which runs 1 to 10. Anything at 7 or above handles daily wear comfortably. Pearl is the one exception and needs more thought.

The blues

London Blue quartz

Deep, slightly steely, and darker than most people expect — closer to ink than to sky. It takes the name from the London Blue shade made famous in topaz, and it is the most dramatic stone we work with. It reads as a jewel rather than a pastel, which makes it the one to choose if the piece is meant to be noticed.

Find it in the London Blue Isla Necklace, the silver version, the matching earrings, and the Reign statement necklace.

Iolite

A violet-blue that shifts depending on the angle you catch it from — sometimes closer to sapphire, sometimes closer to amethyst. It is the quiet, interesting one, and hard to place at first glance.

Hard enough for regular wear, though it prefers not to be knocked against hard surfaces. Available in the mini layering necklace.

The purples and pinks

Amethyst

The classic. Ranges from a soft lilac to a deep royal purple, and it is the stone most people already own something in — which makes it a safe gift and a poor surprise. February's birthstone.

One quirk: long, direct sun exposure can fade it over years, so store it out of a sunny window. It anchors the Amethyst Mini Layering Necklace.

Rhodolite garnet

Not the dark red you picture when you hear garnet. Rhodolite is a raspberry-to-plum pink with real clarity to it, and it is the most quietly luxurious stone in the collection — the one that looks more expensive than it is.

Completely fine for daily wear, and January's birthstone. Set in the Gold Isla Bracelet and the Isla Earrings.

The greens and warm neutrals

Green amethyst

Also known as prasiolite. A soft, cool mint-green, far more subtle than an emerald green — it behaves almost like a neutral, which is why it works so well as a full set rather than a single accent.

It is the stone behind the Green Amethyst Isla Collection, our three-piece set, and it appears in the Isla Bracelet and Isla Earrings.

Champagne quartz

Warm, smoky and golden — the stone that behaves most like a neutral and pairs with gold vermeil more naturally than anything else here. If someone wears the same few pieces every day and wants one more that will never clash, this is it. It's the stone in the Champagne Quartz Solara Bracelet.

The darks

Black spinel

A genuinely hard stone at 8 on the Mohs scale, and glossier than most black stones — it takes a bright polish rather than reading matte. It is the dressiest option in the collection without being heavy. In the Reign necklaces and the Marea Earrings.

Labradorite

Gray at rest, then it flashes blue and green when it catches the light — the effect has its own name, labradorescence. It is the one stone here that changes character as you move through a room. Softer at 6–6.5, so it appreciates being kept away from knocks. In the Marea Earrings.

Freshwater pearl

The exception to everything above. Pearls are organic rather than mineral, and much softer than any gemstone here — which is what gives them that particular depth of luster, and also what makes them the one material that needs real care. Keep perfume and lotion away from them, wipe them after wearing, and never soak them. Our care guide covers the specifics.

They carry a formality the faceted stones don't, without feeling dated in these settings. June's birthstone. Found in the Pearl Reign Necklace and the Marea Earrings.

The Green Amethyst Isla Collection — one stone, three pieces, designed to be worn together.

So how do you choose?

Three questions usually settle it:

  1. Should it be noticed or should it go with everything? London Blue quartz and rhodolite garnet get noticed. Champagne quartz and green amethyst go with everything.
  2. Is there a birthday attached? Garnet is January, amethyst February, pearl June. An easy way to make a gift feel deliberate.
  3. How hard is it going to be worn? Everything here handles daily wear except pearl and labradorite, which want a little more thought.

Common questions

What is green amethyst?
Green amethyst is the common trade name for prasiolite, a soft mint-green quartz. It sits in the same family as purple amethyst and wears just as well.

Is London Blue quartz the same as London Blue topaz?
No — they are different minerals. "London Blue" describes the deep, steely blue shade, which was made famous in topaz. Ours is quartz in that color family.

Which gemstones are best for everyday wear?
Anything at 7 or above on the Mohs scale — quartz, amethyst, green amethyst, garnet and black spinel are all comfortable daily options. Labradorite and pearl are the two that want more care.

Are these real gemstones?
Yes — real natural stones, set in 14k gold vermeil over Italian .925 sterling silver. More on the metal in what is gold vermeil.
